His Truth is Marching On!

By Caleb Camp

One time, while on a short, overseas trip…

Sometimes it seems that I can have severe short-term memory loss when it comes to remembering the goodness and faithfulness of our God.  He has come through so many times, even miraculously!  And yet, when times get tough or things get hard, worry, doubt and fear want to creep right into my mind and tell me why something is impossible.  Even worse, my mind seems to want to partner with and take ownership of the worry, doubt and fear.

That is why it’s good to remind ourselves how the Lord has worked it out before!  Our stories and our testimonies stir up our faith, encourage us and keep us going.  In fact, in Revelation 12 we see how the saints were able to overcome the accuser of the brethren:

Revelation 12:11 NIV – “They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.”

They overcame by the blood of Jesus, and the word of their testimony.  Because of what Jesus did through his blood, they were able to testify about all that he’d already done in their lives.  They were able to testify that they had already overcome.  And this carried them through, to the end.

Their testimony fueled their victory!  Our testimony can fuel our victories, and the victories of others too!

Back to my story: One time, while on a short, overseas trip…

We were partnered with an organization that was present long-term in this predominantly Muslim country, and part of their long-term strategy involved some activities that could have had them thrown out.  In order to accomplish this, they brought in short-term teams.  Sounds fun, doesn’t it.

The project at hand was to distribute as many Bibles as possible, directly into the hands of the people of the land.  They had been running a newspaper ad for years and thousands of people had responded, asking to receive a Bible.  This was another phase of that project.  Give them a Bible and information about how to find somebody to study the Bible with.

Now I should say, that Bible distribution isn’t our normal mode for outreach in most places.  In fact, the last time we had been in this country, the very people we were partnering with had told us to NEVER do anything like this.  Because of this, we really struggled with the assignment.

We set out to a pre-determined part of the city to begin handing out the Word of God.  Again, we were really struggling with this idea and were very hesitant.  We hadn’t been walking long, when my wife, Lydia, suddenly had a powerful headache.  We decided to sit at a small coffee shop and drink some tea.

As we drank tea, we talked about our task and prayed.  We hadn’t been there long when Lydia said, “I know somebody is praying for us, because the headache just lifted!” In that moment, right there over the coffee shop radio, Elvis Presley began to sing over us,

“Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord

He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored

He have loosed the fateful lightening of His terrible swift sword

His truth is marching on

Glory, glory Hallelujah

Glory, glory Hallelujah

Glory, glory Hallelujah

His truth is marching on”

We were blown away.  Here we were, discouraged and unsure that we could actually do what God had brought us there to do, encountering spiritual warfare and overcoming strange headaches, and God showed up.  He chose to speak His truth to us, through Elvis, of all people.

We were energized by the song, which was a proclamation of God’s truth marching down the street.  Our backpacks were full of his truth, and we had been sent to this street to help it march!  So, we got to our feet and began to engage people, randomly on the street.

We had learned enough of the local language to say, “Hello. I have a gift for you!” Then we would hand them a Bible in their language, information about connecting to somebody to study the Bible, and a DVD that had the Jesus Film.  It was wrapped in a bag like a gift.

In most cases, we would give the gift and leave before they were opened.  Sometimes people would open them in our presence and were very grateful for what they had received.  At one point, people began to chase us down.  “Where did you get this?  I have been wanting one of these but never knew where I could find one!  Could I have another one for my brother?”

Empowered by Holy Spirit, within fifteen minutes, our bags were empty and our task was done.  God is so good!  He knew our hesitation and the struggle we were having internally about doing something we had been told to never do.  But, there is a season for everything.  He knew we needed something so out of the ordinary and He sent Elvis to proclaim his truth and his desire over us.

By the blood of the Lamb and the word of Elvis’ testimony through a song on the coffee shop radio, we overcame!

On the way back to the hotel we were reflecting on God’s faithfulness and giving Him thanks for what had just unfolded.  As we celebrated, God gave us another gift.  Somehow, we had been totally oblivious to the fact that, four years earlier my Lydia and I, along with another couple, had spent several weeks prayer walking in that very neighborhood, asking God to reveal Himself.  He gifted us with a reminder of this and a testimony to help us overcome.

Honestly, we were ready to give up that day.  But God….

Galatians 6:9 NIV – “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

The King is alive!
